How do you know when it’s time to update your website?
This isn’t as straight forward an answer as I’d like it to be. Basically, if it’s been more than a year or two … it’s been too long. Search engines like fast, your audience likes simple and everyone likes attractive. If it’s been a few years since you’ve really looked at the speed, structure and user experience of your website then you’re due.
Another question is, do I need an entirely new website? Maybe not. You might just need to restructure and update your content. Finding a professional who’s specialty is web design will be your first step. A professional web designer will be able to tell you whether you need to overhaul the site or if you can get away with a good spring cleaning. Here are a few clues that might help you figure out whether it’s time to call someone for an update:
If you don’t have someone dedicated to running updates on a CMS, like WordPress, and you don’t ever login … you probably need an update.
If you look your website up on a mobile device and it isn’t immediately usable (no pinching, zooming or panning around the screen) … you probably need an update.
If it takes your page longer than 1-2 seconds to load … you probably need an update.
If you haven’t updated imagery or content in the last six months … you probably need an update.
If anyone has ever made any of these comments to you:
“I couldn’t read the text on my phone.”
“I had to zoom in to tap a button.”
“I couldn’t find the information I needed.”
… or anything similar to these … you need an udpate.
Still unsure whether you need an update? No worries.
I realize that budget is often a factor in deciding how often to maintain a website. That’s why I offer free website audits. This includes an SEO report as well as a design and user experience report and a mock-up of a new design concept.
Your website should make your life easier. I would love to help you improve your branding and marketing.
